593 - Card case

After the fail that was the snowman on Sunday night I decided to make something nice to restore my faith in craft. After all, it's been a while since I made something new.

I decided to make a travel card case from a kit I got free in Mollie Makes. I have a pass at work I need to use to swipe in and out of the building, so it's something I do have use for.

My relationship with my sewing machine never really gets any better. It still gives me the fear! But I made this on it and it didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would. At one point I thought I had screwed it up totally. I also managed to sew one piece of the ribbon on to the wrong side of the acetate, which maybe looks a bit wrong.

From the outside, I think it looks lovely. The fabric is nice and my stitches seem quite straight. On the inside is a different story but stitching with acetate and ribbon was a very hard process, and one I'm not in a rush to do again any time. I was hoping the contrasting yellow standing out would look fine, but because I went squint a lot it's maybe a bit mental. I also wish my overlapping edges could have been neater.

Still, it does the job and my work pass fits in it so all is well. The photos actually make it look messier than it is. I will get to grips with my sewing machine one day!

592 - SNOWMAN!

Okay, so I don't usually give up on crafts. If I make a mistake or stop enjoying something, I usually power through and at the end I'm left with that "wow that was a awful but look at the amazing finished result" feeling.  Well not this time.

As you know I've been making my latch hook snowman for quite some time now (like 7 months). It was quite boring to make from the start to be honest. I like latch hooking, but this was basically all white. Ugh. Last night I started the process of cutting it out and putting it together. I have honestly never come across worse instructions for a craft project. The box shows a very happy little girl with her latch hook snowman. She did not make this snowman herself unless she is some sort of genius.

Snowman latchhook

I'm pretty sure I cut the first piece out wrong and even then it took me an hour. Even though the snowman is worked on a gridded piece of canvas, for some reason the cut out guides are marked in half boxes, which makes it very complicated. They really could have provided some pre-printed canvas to avoid all this.

Snowman latchhook

So this was what I did last night in about 2 hours and by the end I was not a happy bunny. I felt I was falling at the last hurdle after spending so long latch hooking the damn thing. I had no desire to finish it and the thought of working on it again when it's so boring/annoying/hard to follow didn't fill me with hope.

So I packed it away in it's box and decided that if I don't have the desire to go anywhere near it for a month or if I'm still angry at it when that time rolls around even if I do try again, then I'm binning it.

Snowman latchhook

I know it seems like a waste but 1) I think I've wasted it by cutting it out wrong anyway and 2) if I'm not enjoying it what's the point! I bought this kit to have fun and make something cool but I'm not feeling it anymore.

Have you ever totally given up on something before?

589 - Wedding Cake Toppers

Firstly, phew I am busy at the moment! Work/ref training and rules learning/derby in general/planning a wedding! That's lots! I've not actually crafted in so long! I'm still working on my snowman ha ha! So in a bid to make stuff easier I'm going for posting on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. It probably won't be forever (as you know I've changed my posting days a lot in the last couple of months) but I like to try and keep it as a standard (at least for a chunk of time) and I just want to make you all aware that I'm not forgetting to post! Cheers! And now on with the post...

As I've started to sort of do some wedding planning, I'm obviously looking at the important things like cake toppers instead of like photographers or guest lists! Ha ha. My first thought was Etsy, as something custom would be amazing.

We do actually have so custom wedding cake toppers in progress from an Etsy seller I've admired for some time, but never had a reason to buy her stuff. So excited! However, before me and Donald settled on a design we liked, I did have some other ones I loved, so check them out!

588 - Fimo Clay

Fimo clay is one of those things I've wanted to do for ages but I've never got around to doing it. I decided that with some Christmas money I got this year, I was going to treat myself to some lovely Fimo stuff. The fact Hobbycraft had packs of clay on sale sealed the deal.

So here's what I got.

Fimo clay stuff
My lovely 24 pack of clay.

Fimo clay stuff
Look at all those colours!

Fimo clay stuff
Some cutting and rolling tools.

Fimo clay stuff
And some lovely Fimo tools. Some cutters, some moulding tools and a measuring board thing.

I've not braved making anything yet. I was one of those kids who didn't like mixing her Play Doh so I might have to get over some issues before I can actually use it ha ha!

585 - Wedding Supplies

As you know, stationery is amazing and one of my favourite things. When Donald proposed, I'm not going to lie, I bought a wedding planner that day. I love planning, organising and all that jazz, and what better excuse to buy some lovely supplies than wedding planning.

I thought you might like a peek at my wedding planning tools, so here we go!

First up my plain old planning notebook. I've been saving this for something special for a while!

Next up my wedding planner, which as I said was bought mere hours after we got engaged. I love Paperchases' stuff, and this is no different.

My favourite item of all I think is my wedding Smashbook. It's going to be awesome to make loads of wedding themed pages as we go along and have it as a keepsake at the end.

I also have this awesome pen and Disney villain post-its I got for Christmas as planning essentials.

As I wanted to keep it all together I chucked it all in a nice Alice in Wonderland bag I've had for a little while.

584 - Work in Progress Wednesday

I feel having a blog is all about changing your mind. Seeing what works and seeing what doesn't. Stuff can work for a while and then you decide it doesn't anymore. I feel that's what has happened to WIP Wednesdays.

Last week I said I was just going to post photos. Mainly because me being like "here's this thing I've been working on" for like the 8th week in a row was probably getting boring. But I haven't made any progress on my snowman in the last week. Work's been busy, I'm trying to learn to be a ref and I'm doing wedding stuff. So there's no guarantee I'll actually make progress on something week to week. With that in mind, this is the last WIP Wednesday. A day off from blogging midweek and not feeling the pressure just to craft so I have something to post about will be nice.

As a farewell, here is what I'm working on tonight...wedding planning! EEK!

583 - Polyvore

So I've had Polyvore for a few years now and I go in and out of using it. It's not like Pinterest where I'm on it everyday, I sort of have to be in the mood to use Polyvore. Last year I used it quite regularly, and I posted up the sets I made for you guys to see.

Lately I've been using it again a wee bit, but I didn't want to post up all the sets I make. So I'm doing one post just to share my profile about.

I have a button on the sidebar if you fancy having a look!

And why not check out some of my recent sets (which are definitely of a better standard than my early ones).

582 - Zebra Town

For those of you who follow me on social network you may already know this, but if not, I do have some pretty exciting news.

Last week I posted this photo.

Stripey :)

For those of you who play roller derby, you'll probably be able to guess, but I've decided to leave competitive skating behind for now and move over to reffing.

As you may know I have issues with my ankle. While other things hurt it, it's not just derby exclusive, but derby is messing with my head a little bit. One issue is the worry of it flaring up mega style, which it has done a few times, so it's always there in the back of my mind. There is also the issues of when we do hitting/contact stuff I'm always like "will this hurt my ankle? If I fall this way will I hurt myself worse? I better not go in for a hit at that ankle and hurt myself". All of which is counter productive to losing my general derby worries and being able to hop about the pack like a pin ball.

General skating, stopping, falling and transitions and stuff are all fine on my ankle, but competitive type stuff messes with it/my head.

I in no way want to leave my league/roller derby in general so reffing seemed like a great opportunity to stay involved! I've not had an on skates ref practise yet, but I'm really excited. My fiancee is a ref for ARRG so I'm hoping he'll impart his great knowledge on to me.

I'm not saying I'll never go back to competitive skating, but just right now it's not for me, so I'm doing what makes me happy/healthy.

I can't wait!

579 - Secret Santa

Okay so, if you were involved in the FVRG secret santa, maybe don't read this, because I'm about to spoil who I got. So here's a picture of a pug to give you something to look at then run away (unless you don't care).

First off I decided to make some customised hand warmers from a pattern I found on Wild Olive. I used FVRG colours with the felt and embroidery thread, and embroidered the recipient's derby name onto the front.

Next up I made bath bombs from my Crafty Creatives box. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be and I'm happy with how they turned out. I'll have to try and make some more of myself with the leftover supplies.

Then I wrapped them up with my nice Christmas ribbon and attached instructions for them both. I'm happy with how they turned out, so hopefully the recipient liked them too!
