171 - Crafty night.

So the boyfriend was out tonight, and I spent the night making his birthday presents. Obviously I can't show you them right now, but I'm happy I got everything finished.

I also did all the cross stitching on my Cross Stitcher Christmas house decorations kit, so all I need to do now is stitch them together.

So pretty right? Hoping to get these stitched up soon as the new issue of Cross Stitcher is out on Tuesday and I get a free cake skirt with that.

The only other thing I did tonight was find yet another craft bag, but instead of buying this one, it was one I already had. I used to go to college to do hairdressing before I had to give it up and find a full time job, and because of this, I have a lot of hair care supplies. I noticed I had a cherry print knitting bag which was full of all my hair brushes. Well that just wouldn't do, so I popped the brushes in a Converse tote bag and put my knitting supplies in the new bag.

I'm very happy, cause all my knitting stuff was crammed in the rose basket with all the wool I had and it wasn't very nice. Much better now.

Finally I finished Fight Club today. I have to say, I love the movie, but I didn't like the book, not at all. It just didn't seem to work as well as the movie, and I very rarely like the movie better than the book. So it's going in my charity shop pile. I'm trying to be good and get rid of books I know I won't read again. I also plan to have a clothes clear out soon, as I put on my Heroes "save the cheerleader, save the world" tee yesterday and it was far too short. So I've not idea why I kept it. So hopefully a clear out will be on the cards soon.

170 - Xmas xmas xmas

So Christmas is coming, and the goose is getting fat...apparently, I wouldn't know, I've never had goose. Anyway the point is, even though it's still quite far away, Christmas is looming ever close for us crafters, and with so much to make, and other things still to craft for, there is every reason to start Christmas planning early.

I spent a lot of tonight going through all my magazines and putting post its on all the designs for cards and decorations that I liked. Obviously more Christmas type magazines are going to come out before December, so I'll have to have a gander through them too, but already I've found some lovely things.

So here's my Christmas make it list so far.

  • 8 Xmas cards.
  • A wreath.
  • Christmas ornament for my mum.
  • Cake skirt I'm getting free in Cross Stitcher next month.
  • Christmas cake (nice Delia Smith one, and a chocolate one too because Donald doesn't like fruit cake).
  • And, as many Christmas decorations as I can make between now and when our tree goes up. There are so many I want to make, so I'm just going to try and make a lot of them.
I've got a lot of ideas for decorations from magazines, Pinterest, other blogs and this amazing list of 101 Christmas Ornaments. I highly recommend you check this list out, it's amazing.

I've said my mum wants a Christmas ornament, and she has requested a rose. My Gran's name was Rose, and she died last November, and my mum would like something to remember her by. I think I'm going to make something like the picture below (but not a ring). I found a few tutorials online, so I'm quite excited about this.

Now...wreaths! I've never made a wreath before. My Gran used to make proper ones, and use clips of holly and berries and stuff and they always looked really nice. I'd like to make a wreath I could use every year. Currently I'm torn between three!

If you want to have a look at all the other Christmas stuff I have my eyes on, why not check out my lovely Xmas pinterest board (I'm sure a lot more will be added in the coming weeks).

My last stage in Xmas planning (apart from actually starting to make things) is to write a shopping list of everything else I need. Hopefully I won't need too much, though I would like some nice Christmas ribbon. I think I'll need some felt that I don't have the colours for though, and defiantly some wreath supplies.

Anyone else EXCITED!

169 - Derby stuff

So, I've had some new derby stuff for quite some time, but I've been waiting on my last helmet sticker to come before I posted them all so I could just post them in the one go.

First we have my wife slogan skirt from Knock Turnal. If you don't play derby, you might not know this tradition, but basically derby girls can choose to have a derby wife, and if you have you, you tend to have something with a slogan for eachother on it. So I have this for Knock, and she has "eat my Pixxie dust" on hers, which I love!

Next, I got numbers on the arms of all my derby t-shirts. They're changing the rules now so players need to have their numbers on their shirt instead of just written on their arms in pen, which is the way they did it before.

And finally, my amazing helmet. I found out that my helmet didn't fit a couple of weeks ago, so I treated myself to a lovely pink sparkle Nutcase helmet, and it fits so much better. Then I popped on to Etsy to find some lovely helmet stickers, and found these ones at Kelly Graphics. My old, boyfriend made name label has a Disney font on it, so I loved that I could still get it in the Disney font!

I also bought some knee gaskets because my knee pads tend to twist when I fall quite badly, which is never good. So now they fit a lot better and I'm happy.

So phew, that is a lot of money on derby, but I do love my new helmet! It's so pretty!

As for derby, I'm now on the Rec team, which means we're not on the home/travel teams, but we all get to practise together and then hopefully bout against the home teams/other teams. I was going for a place on the home team, but I didn't quite make it, but I'm really excited about the Rec team. We're thinking of a name and logo and it's exciting to be a part of that. Plus it means I only practise on a Sunday now, so Wednesday are a little more relaxing.

168 - Birthday elephants

So I've been stitching a card for my niece, and I managed to finish it tonight after going to see Jurassic Park at the cinema (which was AWESOME by the way!).

Before I show you my card, I'm going to show you what most stitchers try and hide, and that is the back of my stitches! I have to say I don't believe in the whole "don't tie knots" and "make sure the front looks the same as the back". As long as it looks right on the front, I'm happy. Case and point, the back of my card.

Mental right?!? Can you even tell what it is? I honestly don't know if it's the right way up or not, I think the photo might be wrong. Anyway, here's what it's supposed to look like.

Much better right? And now I can get on with stitching my boyfriend's birthday pressies AND THEN write my Xmas craft list. I have loads of awesome ideas to share! :)

167 - charity love

I do love charity shopping (as you should know from the amount of posts I do on it) and yesterday my mum and I went to Corstorphine (one of the best places for a lot of charity shops in a small area) and had a look around.

Yesterday I found something which I wasn't sure what I was going to use it for, but I had to buy it because it was only £1.25, and so wonderfully weird, I just had to own it.

Very pretty in a Granny sort of way eh? I'm going to hang it on the back of the door of my craft/spare room and put cards in it once they're made, so they're nice and safe and then I can hand them out at Xmas and birthdays and such. Woo.

I also got these.

Another quite Granny cross stitch, but at a £1, who can argue? I actually had to fight with some old women to look in the basket or knitting patterns. Crazy times. I also picked up something else, but it's for my boy's birthday, so I can't show you it. Boo.

I've almost finished my niece's card, and it's looking awesome, so photos of that hopefully tomorrow.

166 - Derby photos

So I've not had the best day derby-wise. Not many things can reduce me to tears quite as often, but hey, it manages it.

Of course, I still love it, and I know I'll be fine tomorrow, but ho hum. On Wednesday we did a mock bout (the first time I've ever played a full bout) and we took some photos. So, enjoy!

Team black!

Me, the wife and our slogan skirts

Team black!

Team black! We lost, but we're still happy!
So, not the best day, but I'm already feeling a lot better about it than I was earlier in the day, so it's all good. I have some lovely new derby things, but I'll show you them in another post yes?

Anyhoo I'm off to make my niece's birthday card. Night!

165 - Feeling Stitchy contest

So I've started my Covered in Stitches contest piece for the Feeling Stitchy blog. I picked my book as Stephen King's IT, and I've been toying with a couple of patterns. So I tried drawing it two different ways, and asked the boy for his opinion, and he liked a bit of both of them. Typical. So I traced the third design (so I didn't have to draw it again) and then ironed it on the fabric.

I've picked some grey/silver fabric, because the scene is gray and rainy, so I thought this would convay it quite well. Hopefully I'll get on to the stitching over the weekend.

Ta da! I'm going to have to try and making my stitching awesome for this one. I'll be putting in some rain and the flow of water on the road, which I didn't want to draw, because it's sometimes hard to cover up the pen lines.

So apparently a while ago Cider with Sophie tagged me for this award! Thanks so much! I love getting blog awards and knowing that people are actually reading Skates and Stitches! However, I am rubbish and didn't see it till now. Gah! So, a little late, but here it is.

163 - Hmm..

So I spent a while tonight trying to sort out my craft occasions folder which I mentioned a couple of posts back. Basically having a list of all the occasions and all the crafty things which match up with them from my magazines.

I thought it sounded like a great idea, so I spent an hour or so trying to make it. I think I got through about 6 magazines, and decided to give up for the night because I was sleepy.

However, now that I'm a little bit in, I'm not sure that I would actually use it. The reason being that I think having to look through all the magazines to see the pictures anyway would probably take the same amount of time as just flicking through them all for something that tickles my fancy.

I think the only way it would save time would be if I was looking for cakes patterns or something and NONE of my magazines had any cake patterns, so obviously looking through them would be a waste of time.

*Sigh*. I dislike when I try something and it doesn't turn out as I had hoped. Plus considering how many magazines I have, it would take me ages to finish, and I'm unsure I could be bothered filing it out every month.

So I spent an hour of so and some of my lovely labels for no reason really. Boo. :(

161 - Brithday cards.

A while ago in The World of Cross Stitching a got a little free gift which was three mini flower cards. They were so cute, and last week I decided to stitch one for my Aunt's birthday. I can now show you it because I now know that she's recieved it!

Birthday card for my aunt.

It didn't take long to do but it still looks awesome (though I must say popping a card that small in the post box did fill me with a little fear!). I had sorted out all my threads for the 3 cards, and then obviously only had to use a small chunk of them to do the card I choose to do. So I made myself a little homemade thread sorter with an idex card and a hole punch, so when I do come around to stitching the other two cards, I won't have to sort the thread again. Woo!

Not much but I was quite proud of it (check out my Nightmare Before Xmas pj's).

On a final note, why not check out the Skates and Stitches Facebook page? I now have 25 fans so I have a proper username and everything. Also, on Friday Mr X Stitch himself commented! If he likes it, he can't be wrong, right?

160 - Christmas stitching.

Let me firstly say that I know I've been dropping off the blogger radar a lot lately and then coming back on with a surge of posts. This is mainly because nothing will happen for a while to blog about/I don't have the time to make anything! And then I suddenly do have the time etc, and therefore, lots of blog posts arrive!

Don't worry, I won't be leaving my blog alone for too long, though looking at the amount of posts I do each month, it does jump about a bit! So I've decided I will make sure I do at least 10 posts a month (which isn't a lot, but even if NOTHING is happening, or I don't have too much time, I can definitely commit to that). That's around 1 post every 2-3 days, which is actually a pretty steady flow when you think about it. So yeah, keep an eye on the monthly post counter!

So I've decided that I'm going to do a lot of Christmas stitching. I wasn't really into any of my crafts last Christmas, so this is my first time round.

So my way to tackle this, was to stock up on as many Christmas kits and freebies as possible.

I ordered this double pack of magazines from Origin, which were released last Tuesday, but I just got them a few days ago. Not happy! I though pre-order folk would get them first but I guess not.

I was happy to get the Rudolf kit with this one, as that was the one advertised, but I saw on the Cross Stitch Crazy Facebook page that a lot of people had received a non-Christmas bunny kit. Apparently Rudolf was only for the first 700 orders. I guess I got in there, and I'm happy, but I swear it didn't say that when I ordered and I would have been very annoying if I had received a non-Christmas kit.

Mega bumper pack of stuff, with enough things to make cards and Christmas decorations! It's so lovely!

Free kits from other magazines (and the one I bought before from a charity shop). The one on the far left is 3 little house tree decorations! So cute. Can't wait to stitch them all.

So now I need to write a list of everything I need to make. My mum has requested a Christmas tree decoration, so I'll need to get on that too. I also want some decorations for myself and Donald's first Christmas tree AND some sort of wreath! Oh my! When I get a list, I'll let you know.

I know it's early, but stitching can take A LONG TIME!

So what are you guys making for Christmas?

159 - The great craft tidy.

So yesterday I had a less than perfect day at work, and skating the night before wasn't the best either, so I did what I always do when I'm wound up...I tidy. I don't know what it is, but getting everything else organised seems to help the shit I can't control sort itself out in my head. And I love seeing the finished result.

So tonight I decided to sort out my craft stuff. I have a lot of craft stuff, and having bought quite a lot of it recently, my craft area wasn't as tidy or organised as it could be. So I decided to tackle it. I don't think I mentioned it either, but I won ANOTHER Cross Stitch Crazy competition! I was very happy, and it came earlier in the week. I did happen to get ANOTHER Fizzy Moon bear like the one I had (bummer) but he's now on my desk. I also won a lovely craft caddy, which was the main reason for the craft clear out, as I needed to put some stuff in it.

So yeah, check out the photos! And don't judge me.

The tidy up begins!

Full! So pretty!

New craft caddy!

Buttons and fastenings lunch box.

Papercraft box.

Huge crafty box.

Sewing basket.

Cross stitch and embroidery bag.

Fabric bag.

To-do basket.

All finished and back in place!

I forgot I had my craft notebook, so I have a lot of blog notes and crafty notes in the back of my filo fax and saved as blog drafts that can now be put into one place. The folder is for possible the best (and geekiest) idea I've ever read!

While I was looking for an anniversary pattern for my Aunt I spent ages looking through all my magazines to see if I had one. Waste of time because I didn't. Then I read on Cross Stitch Crazy's blog (a comment from a reader) that a good way to tackle this was to keep a folder or notebook of occasions and then list the magazines that feature that occasion. So like a Christmas page, a birthday page, a new baby page. How good an idea is this!?! I love it! And so I'm going to do it next night I have the chance. Geek out!

Finally, check this out in Cross Stitch magazine!

My tweet is right there, under Mollie Makes! I'm totally famous...sort of!
